IUD insertion
Need a new contraceptive and IUD-curious?
Or already have an IUD and need it replaced?
I can insert or replace your Mirena, Kyleena or copper IUD.
Why do we love an IUD?
Prevention of pregnancy, obviously. IUDs are >99% effective at preventing pregnancy over a period of 5-10 years (depending on which you choose).
Set and forget: once it’s in you don’t need to worry about it - no more setting alarms to remember to take the pill at the same time each day.
Effective treatment for other gynae symptoms and conditions like heavy periods, painful periods and endometriosis (Mirena and Kyleena only; may or may not be appropriate for your case).
In your 30 minute initial suitability assessment, I will:
Take a relevant medical history
Discuss with you the types of IUD, including the pros and cons of each
Discuss with you alternatives to an IUD, if I think they may suit you better
Discuss the insertion process, including the risks
Develop a personalised plan for pain relief during the procedure (definitely not going to recommend that you white-knuckle it through an IUD insertion!)
Examine you, perform cervical screening and STI screening (if relevant)
Provide you with a written plan for the day of the IUD insertion
In your 45 minute IUD insertion procedure, I will:
Get you to do a pregnancy test, if relevant
Review your Informed Consent with you and answer any last minute questions
Administer any agreed-upon pain relief
Insert your IUD!
Debrief you after the procedure, answering any questions
Provide you with written and verbal instructions on what you can do to take care of yourself after the procedure, how you can reduce the risk of complications, and what to do if you have any concerns
