Your first pregnancy appointment

Two lines on that pregnancy test?!

This is not a drill! Head straight to the GP for your first pregnancy appointment, do not pass go, do not collect $200.

(Although you could use it, kids are truly expensive).

As a GP for pregnancy, I can help you get your pregnancy off to the healthiest possible start so you can relax and enjoy this special time (as long as you’re not feeling absolutely revolting, although if you are I can help with that too!).

I can help you with early pregnancy care (what this page is about), or alternatively GP shared care.

When I do your early pregnancy care, you see me for your pregnancy appointments until we transition your care to your obstetrician or midwife. If going public you will usually see me for 3-4 visits. If going private it will be 1-2 visits (no problem if you’re not sure, I can take you through all the options).

During your first pregnancy appointment, we will cover:

  • Your medical history, including any risk factors

  • Information on things like prenatal vitamins, what you can eat, what medications are safe and what vaccinations are recommended in pregnancy

  • Early pregnancy blood tests

  • Genetic testing, if not already done

  • Your first pregnancy ultrasound

  • Referral to a private obstetrician, if applicable

  • What to do if you feel sick / start throwing up

  • What to do if something goes wrong (and what to look out for)

  • Any other questions you might have eg “can I still have my morning latte / colour my hair / lift weights / do this other thing I like to do?”

In subsequent early pregnancy appointments, we will cover:

  • Any genetic risks in you or your partner

  • First trimester screening, including NIPT and combined screening

  • Additional early testing you might need including fetal rhesus screening or early glucose tolerance test

  • Referral into the public system and how to make your first appointment

  • Fetal morphology ultrasound

Later on in your pregnancy,

you’re welcome to come back and see me for antenatal breastfeeding preparation (between 28 and 34 weeks gestation is best).

  • First appointment (30 mins):

    Fee: $205

    Medicare rebate: $46.75

    Out of pocket: $158.25

    Further appointments (15/30 mins):

    Fee: $115/205

    • Your partner if you have one (helpful, not compulsory)

If you have a positive pregnancy test and are thinking “omg what do I do now?!”, I’m your girl.
