Prepare for Breastfeeding
Let’s set you and your baby up for breastfeeding success.
I’m not sure if you’ve heard, but breastfeeding is hard (ask me how I know).
While 96% of mothers in Australia start breastfeeding, by around 3 months only 39% of babies are still exclusively breastfed. There are many reasons for this, including the woefully inadequate breastfeeding education and support our health system provides.
I can help you prepare for and optimise your breastfeeding journey before you start with individualised breastfeeding education.
I’ll make sure you know what you’re doing (as much as that’s possible!), what the likely roadblocks are for you personally and what to do about them, and when and how to seek further help if needed.
I can also help if you’re a non-gestational parent hoping to induce lactation.
(If you’ve already had your baby and breastfeeding is not coming easily, I can also help with comprehensive breastfeeding support.)
In your 60 minute antenatal breastfeeding education and preparation consult, I will:
Review your medical and pregnancy history
Examine your breasts (with your consent!)
Identify any risk factors you might have for breastfeeding difficulties and provide advice on management
Provide evidence-based breastfeeding education along with a take-home written education pack
Formulate an individualised plan to help you meet your breastfeeding goals
Breastfeeding education topics we will cover:
Basic anatomy and physiology of breastfeeding
Antenatal colostrum expression (colostrum expression pack included)
The first days and weeks of breastfeeding
The gestalt method of breastfeeding
Optimising your supply
Managing engorgement
